See the fifth post in this thread as an example: I remember complaints about it when Maps was first released with Mavericks.
I have seen the exact same black screen issue with the Maps application in past versions of OS X.
I can confirm Maps application issue - black screen. I just installed macOS 10.12 (16A238m) - the first public beta. Not enough graphics memory in the VM? (Mine is set at 256 MB) Or something else? My MacBook Pro is a late 2014 model, with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB hard drive. The one odd thing I notice so far is that when I check out Sierra's Maps, all I see is a black background. I have macOS Sierra (beta 2) running in VMWare Fusion 8.1.1 on my MacBook Pro running El Capitan.
